Teaching
Fall and Spring semester 2008 - 2009
On leave --Fall semester 2007
ASTR 170a: Introduction to cosmology.
The primary aim of this course is to provide a broad introduction to
cosmology and extra-galactic astrophysics. Topics covered include:
mapping the properties of the Universe, its contents, geometry and
fate using a variety of probes - galaxies, supernovae, gamma-ray
bursts and quasars. The course is intended for non-science majors and
satisfies the quantitative reasoning (QR) requirement for Yale
undergraduates. The 3 required textbooks for this course are:
Introduction to Cosmology by Barbara Ryden; The Big Bang by Joseph
Silk and The Once and Future Cosmos (Scientific American special
issue).
Spring semester 2008
ASTR 600b: Special topics in Cosmology.
This graduate course focuses on advanced topics that are currently
frontier research areas. In addition to lectures, we will be reading,
discussing and working through a few seminal papers every week. Meeting
time 1:30 - 4:00 pm on Fridays.
