Discussion Sections |
There will be discussion sections each week, led by one of the
Teaching assistants.
These have 2 purposes:
(1) provide math and physics background and help teach problem solving skills
relevant for completing the homeworks.
(2) discuss interesting astronomy topics of direct relevance to the course
in more detail than can be covered in class.
Participation in the Discussion Sections is optional. However, there
are 2 incentives to participate. First, the exams will count for a smaller fraction of the final grade for
those who regularly participate in the Discussion Sections, and attendance in the Discussion Sections will
count for up to 10% of the final grade (pro-rated by the fraction of Discussion Sections that one attends. i.e., if you go to no discussion sections, HWs & exams are worth 80% of the final grade; if you go to all the discussion sections, HWs & exams are worth 70% of the final grade, 10% for discussion sections ;
if you go to half of the discussion sections HWs & exams are worth 75% of the final grade, 5% for discussion sections).
Second, the instruction in the Discussion Sections is designed to help you do better on the homework and
exams.
Sections will begin at the end of the 2nd week and the beginning of the 3rd week of the semester,
i.e. the week preceeding the due date of the first homework set.
