Telescope Information
SMARTS
As of October 1, 2012, the management of SMARTS operation has split.
- Yale is managing the 1.3m and the 1.5m in queue scheduled service mode only.
- Georgia State University (GSU) is managing the 0.9m in user mode only.
- The 1.0m will be closed until further notice.
Yale PIs can therefore propose for the 1.3m and the 1.5m through Yale.
For 13B there are 175 hours of time available for Yale proposers.
- Anyone with funding can purchase time on the 0.9m through GSU ($600/night) or more time on the 1.3m and 1.5m ($200 per hour) through Yale. Please see Victoria Misenti in the Business Office for more information on these options.
INSTRUMENTS:
- 1.5m - CHIRON (high-res Echelle spectrograph); SIMON (IR spectrograph).
- 1.3m - ANDICAM (optical/IR imager)
Further information about SMARTS observing can be found on the SMARTS Resources for Observers page.
WIYN
Yale has a 17% share of WIYN, but some time is taken off the top for engineering, commissioning, etc. This equates to about 26 nights per semester. The distribution for 13B, including NOAO payback nights, is ~13 dark, ~8 gray, and ~9 bright [30 total].
Instrument information
- WIYN will be block scheduling SparsePak + WHIRC, WHIRC + Visitor Instruments and Hydra.
- WTTM will be offered only if it is repaired prior to 2013B, so programs that would like to use WTTM to improve delivered image quality should contact the WHIRC support scientists prior to proposing.
- Starting in March 2013, pODI will also be available in shared-risk mode. pODI "static" mode should be fully operational by this time, but "coherent" operations might still be in commissioning state.
It is important that proposers should include (in sufficient detail) filters required for runs, especially any that are needed from the "MOSAIC" sets.
Click here for more information about proposing for pODI.
Pre-proposals for WIYN are due on Friday, March 1, 2013.
Further information about WIYN observing can be found on the WIYN observing information page.
Keck
We have 20 nights per year (10 nights per semester) through our agreements with CalTech and Keck. These nights must be balanced between Keck I/II as well as moon phase. There are also up to 5 nights per year available for collaborative projects between CalTech and Yale. Such projects have a CalTech PI, and are submitted through the CalTech TAC.
For 13B we have the following suggested allocation:
- KI: 3 dark, 1 grey (Yale), 1 bright
- KII: 4 dark, 1 grey (Yale), 0 bright
Yale Keck time is open to faculty and postdocs. Postdocs are particularly encouraged to apply for Keck time.
Pre-proposals for Keck are due on Friday, March 1, 2013.
Further information on available Keck instruments, etc. can be found on the Keck website.
