SPM Catalog 1.1

The Yale/San Juan Southern Proper Motion Catalog

at the South Galactic Pole:  Revision 1

The SPM Catalog 1.1 contains the results of the Southern Proper Motion program (SPM) for an extended region around the South Galactic Pole.  The SPM, which will eventually cover the sky south of Dec. = -17 degrees, includes absolute proper motions, positions, and B,V photographic photometry for stars in the magnitude range 5 < V < 18.5.  The proper motions are measured relative to external galaxies and the positions are on the system of the ICRS via the Hipparcos/Tycho catalog, (equinox 2000, epoch 1991.25).

The SPM 1.1 represents a recompilation of the same plate material and measures which were used in the SPM 1.0 , but with an improved treatment of the corrections to absolute proper motion.  In fact, the SPM 1.1 was constructed by extracting the data from the SPM 2.0 for all objects in the SPM 1.0.  A slightly different criterion for distinguishing duplicate entries from true nearby pairs has resulted in the net addition of seven more total objects in the SPM 1.1, (see the table below).  Also, due to the manner in which object numbers are assigned in the overlap region of adjacent fields, combined with the inclusion of additional fields not available when the SPM 1.0 was compiled, approximately 700 objects in the SPM 1.1 have been assigned new identification numbers different from those in the SPM 1.0.
