Public Observing Nights

General Information:
PLEASE NOTE: As of June 2008, Yale Observatory Public Nights will be held on the 1st and 3rd *TUESDAY* of each month.

Due to construction of a planetarium at the Leitner Family Observatory, there will be no "First Tuesdays" Public Lectures during Spring semester 2008. Public observing will continue as normal. However, bathroom facilites at the observatory are currently limited to portable toilets. Any questions about the status of public nights can be directed to Tomer Tal.

The "First Tuesdays" Public Lecture Series is now part of the public night. Rain or shine, we will have a public lecture inside the Leitner Family Observatory on the first Tuesday of every month during the school year. Following this lecture, we will have public observing, weather permitting. Please note that this will only be on the first Tuesday; the third Tuesday will continue to be just for observing (weather permitting).

See this flier (pdf) for more information.

Twice a month, the Department of Astronomy at Yale University runs a public night, where the public can come and look through one of the Department's many telescopes and have questions answered about astronomy. The astronomical objects we view change seasonally, and range from the Moon to the planets (such as Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus) to nearby star clusters and galaxies. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to join us for these events.

Undetermined: We don't know if we're going to be able to observe yet.

Please Note:

  1. Please do not arrive earlier than the posted observing start time.
  2. As this is an outdoor activity, if there is bad weather or forecasts of bad weather, we must cancel the observing.
  3. The final decision as to whether or not the observing will occur will be posted here by 5:00 pm on the day of the public night.
  4. Currently, public nights are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Location:
Public nights are held at the Leitner Family Observatory, and last about 1.5 hours. The Observatory is located in Farnam Memorial Gardens near the corner of Prospect St. and Edwards St. in New Haven. If you have never been to the student observatory before, you are STRONGLY encouraged to look at the map (.pdf, .jpg, or Google Map) of its location, since there is currently only a small sign marking the driveway. There is now ample free parking, so guests are invited to park in the lot adjacent to the observatory.

Contact Information:
Information pertaining to the next public night can be obtained via this website, which will be updated by 5pm on the day of the event. Any questions about public nights can be directed to Tomer Tal.
