Movie Night "The Core" shown on the planetarium dome... The science in this "so bad it's kind of good" movie suggests that birds navigate using the earth's magnetic field (true), that the magnetic field of the earth is related to the inner core of the earth (true), that the magnetic field of the earth protects us from solar radiation (basically true), and that microwaves from the Sun could fry entire cities if the earth's magnetic field faded (not really true). As an intrepid team of scientists journey to the center of the earth to restart the core with nuclear weapons, we'll laugh at and the dissect the good and bad science in the movie. We'll also talk about the real variations in the magnetic field of the earth happening right now and what this might really mean for life on earth. 7pm - 10pm |
