12.01.2010 | How Many Stars? Three Times as Many as We Thought, Report Says
Scientists said Wednesday that the number of stars in the universe had been seriously undercounted, and they estimated that there could be three times as many stars out there as had been thought.
A photo taken in 2006 by the Hubble Space Telescope shows a cluster of diverse galaxies, including a bright elliptical galaxy.
11.03.2010 | Cosmic Curiosity Reveals Ghostly Glow of Dead Quasar
While sorting through hundreds of galaxy images as part of the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project two years ago, Dutch school teacher and volunteer astronomer Hanny van Arkel stumbled upon a strange-looking object that baffled professional astronomers. Two years later, a team led by Yale University researchers has discovered that the unique object represents a snapshot in time that reveals surprising clues about the life cycle of black holes...

10.28.2010 | Study says solar systems like ours may be common
Kamuela, HI, Oct. 28, 2010 - Nearly one in four stars like the Sun could have Earth-size planets, according to observations of nearby solar-mass stars made with the Keck telescopes in Hawaii.

08.19.2010 | Astronomers Use Galactic Magnifying Lens to Probe Elusive Dark Energy
A team of astronomers has used a massive galaxy cluster as a cosmic magnifying lens to study the nature of dark energy for the first time. When combined with existing techniques, their results significantly improve current measurements of the mass and energy content of the universe. The findings appear in the August 20 issue of the journal Science.

We would like to formally announce that Yale has joined the SDSS-III collaboration. Yale will pay $900K for full institutional membership, which extends through mid-2014. We are grateful to the Yale Provost's office for providing funding.
06.17.2010 | Astronomers Witness Star Birth
Astronomers have glimpsed into the earliest stages of star formation, and have seen what could be the youngest known star at the very moment it is being born.
Astronomers caught a glimpse of a future star just as it is being born out of the surrounding gas and dust, in a star-forming re
05.23.2010 | Astronomer Wins a Women in Space Science Award
New Haven, Conn. — Yale astronomer C. Megan Urry has won the annual Women in Space Science Award, given by the Women's Board of the Adler Planetarium to "an outstanding woman in space science who exemplifies the characteristics that lead to success academically and in the work force."

03.25.2010 | After Growth Spurt, Supermassive Black Holes Spend Half Their Lives Veiled in Dust
Supermassive black holes found at the centers of distant galaxies undergo huge growth spurts as a result of galactic collisions, according to a new study by astronomers at Yale University and the University of Hawaii. Their findings appear in the March 25 edition of Science Express.

03.16.2010 | Super Supernova: White Dwarf Star System Exceeds Mass Limit
An international team led by Yale University has, for the first time, measured the mass of a type of supernova thought to belong to a unique subclass and confirmed that it surpasses what was believed to be an upper mass limit. Their findings, which appear online and will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal, could affect the way cosmologists measure the expansion of the universe.
