The quasars presented below were discovered behind the Magellanic Clouds during spectroscopic follow-up of variability selected sources in the MACHO database. Quasar candidates were selected based on aperiodic light curve behavior; details of the selection process can be found in Geha et al. (2003). Light curves, spectra and finding charts are available for 39 quasars behind the Large Magellanic Clouds (LMC) and 9 quasars behind the Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC). In addition, light curve data is available for 12 previously identified quasars/AGN in the LMC. This website will be updated as spectroscopic follow-up of MACHO candidates continues.
The current distribution of quasars relative to the LMC [ ps version] and SMC [ps version]. Red circles indicated quasars listed below. All files can also be viewed and downloaded by clicking on individual sources. The full MACHO quasar list is available, as well as gzipped tar files of all MACHO quasar light curve data and FITS finding charts.
