Under bright skies and chilly conditions, Frogs in Space (FIS), our joint Astronomy-Poli Sci squad (with an ever-increasing circle of friends) began the season on a positive note. Sunday's four hour softball marathon (even longer for those who showed up early to practice) produced one tie and one win. Sixteen hearty souls braved the forty-something temps (including 6 women -- awesome, ladies!) to help propel FIS to the top ranks of the league. The double-header began with a game against Mismatched Bases (molecular biologists, more-or-less). FIS jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead by the end of the second inning. Things quickly began to deteriorate, however, as the lead eroded steadily through the following innings. Everything came to head in the 6th, and last, inning as FIS struggled to hold a four run lead. Run after excruciating run crossed the plate for Mismatched Bases, with outs being few and far between. The four run lead disappeared, and the game was tied with the clock making clear that this had to be the last inning. With runners on 1st and 3rd and two outs, it came down to the last batter for Mismatched Bases. Our team held fast though, made the last out, and walked off with a 14-14 tie game. The second game, against "Vintage Leather", an American Studies, History, (and something else) joint team, turned out to be the mirror image of the first game. The second game remained fairly close (with FIS retaining a small lead), until the top of a 6-run 7th inning, when FIS blew the game open and waltzed to a 19-9 victory. Many contributed to the combined 33-runs scored on Sunday. I think everyone present is behind me in saying that the greatest highlights of the day where provided by softball rookie Dipunkar -- who repeatedly interjected his unique style of Cricket play into the game to produce one of the most astounding performances witnessed in a long time -- 5 for 5 over the two games -- laser shots all. Dipunkar, please keep coming out to the games! The purple heart away for the day goes to another newcomer, Lisa, who, despite having pulled a muscle, stuck it out and hobbled her way towards first during every at bat during the second game. Talk about having heart! It practically brought a tear to your dear captain's eye. Within the context of a great team effort, several players had spectular outings. History Jeff played the consumate lead(off)ing man, going 5 for 6. Newcomer Dan held down the bottom part of the order with an excellent 4-5 outing. Two home runs were contributed by Terry, and Matt started off the fireworks with a four-baser in the first inning of the first game. Great game everyone! Next week's game is at 2:00 pm on Sunday. It will be against "Team Teratoma", the Physicians' Assistant team. As I mentioned at the game, I can't attend, but you'll obviously be in very trustworthy hands with Terry. I'll send more details and reminders later in the week. Doug
