PROJECTS

The following list is a preliminary compilation of project titles/descriptions that were sent in response to an email request in June '05. The main purpose of listing names is that we know who to blame if things don't get done. Note that there is obviously some overlap between projects and project categories. Linkgs will point to more information / results as it becomes available. Email dokkum@astro.yale.edu if you would like to make corrections and/or add things to this list.

REDSHIFT 1 OR BELOW

Recent star formation history of intermediate-redshift early-types
Extend recent GALEX results on recent star formation in nearby early-types to higher redshifts (z=0.4-0.6, for which near-UV falls in U band). Morphologies from GOODS/GEMS. IRAC/MIPS will help lift degeneracies with dust extinction. Comparison to semi-analytical models.

Rest-frame K-selected galaxies at z=0.7-1.0
Combine ECDFS, HDFN, and EGS to study a rest-frame K-selected sample of galaxies at z=0.7-1.0. Photometric redshifts will be derived using the "Artificial Neural Network" (ANNz) methods. Co-Is will come from three teams (EGS, GOODS, ECDFS).
Huang, ...

Sizes, surface brightnesses of a complete IRAC-selected sample at z=1
Since IRACs PSF is huge IRAC-selected samples should not suffer from surface brightness effects. Hence we can check how many galaxies at z=1 are missed by surface brightness selection.
Franx, Illingworth, ...

REDSHIFT 2 AND UP

Mass estimates of 1500 U/B drop-out candidates
Use IRAC to better constrain masses.
Rix, Gawiser, ...

IRAC photometry of LBGs, LAEs, and DLAs
Optically-selected LBGs at z~3, z=3.1 Lyman alpha emitters, and z<4 DLAs. Both individual detections and stacking for average SEDs. Determine stellar masses, star formation histories, dust content.
Gawiser, Rix, ...

Faint end of the luminosity/mass function
The most massive galaxies at z~2.5 are mostly red. However, current samples suggest that the LF of blue galaxies is much steeper than that of red galaxies. The IRAC sample may constrain the shape of the LF and MF well below L*. Whether this is possible will depend on the accuracy of IRAC-derived photometric redshifts.
Marchesini, van Dokkum, ...

Properties of DRGs
Selected to be red in rest-frame U-V (or observed J-K). Masses, fraction of red/dead (or comatose) versus starforming/dusty.
van Dokkum, Franx, Illingworth, ...

Properties of z=5-7 galaxies
Selected to be red in K-3.6
Franx, Illingworth, Labbe, Bouwens, ...

EVOLUTION / LARGE REDSHIFT RANGE

Photometric redshifts of IRAC selected galaxies
(based on IRAC photometry), out to highest possible redshifts.
Questions:
- can we really get good photometric redshifts from IRAC data alone?
- can we use IRAC to go to z=6 and beyond with this technique?
Franx, Wuyts, Brammer (thesis?), ...

Morphologies and masses of intensely star-forming galaxies
Galaxies between z=0 and z=1.5-2 (i.e. mostly "blue" galaxies).
Rix, Bell, ...

Emergence of the red sequence
Color-magnitude relation at z=0-3+. When was the red sequence populated? What are the properties of galaxies on the high z red sequence? Separate age/dust, connection with AGN.
Taylor (thesis)/Labbe, Franx, Bell, van Dokkum, ...

Properties of massive galaxies at z=1-4
SEDs, masses, how many are red, densities of red galaxies, etc. Correlations between mass and SEDs.
Labbe, Franx, van Dokkum, Damen (thesis), ...

AGN SCIENCE

Identification and X-ray spectral stacking of the most heavily obscured E-CDFS AGN
Combining Chandra and Spitzer.
Steffen, Brandt, Alexander, Bauer, Lehmer, ...

X-ray Stacking of, and AGN in, the 40-50 luminous E-CDFS galaxies at z~5-6
(Follows section 3.4 of the proposal).

Host galaxies of AGN
Use infrared from Spitzer and MUSYC to constrain stellar mass content, star formation rates (combined with HST and MUSYC data). Detailed morphological analysis for brighter, local galaxies, CAS parameters from GEMS data. Evolution of host galaxy properties. Interactions, mergers, environments of AGN.
Simmons (thesis), Urry, ...

SEDs of AGN
Combine Spizer, MUSYC, HST, Chandra. Fits with synthetic and observed multiwavelength spectra. Searches for Compton-thick AGN in IR catalog.
van Duyne (thesis), Urry, ...

IR number counts of AGN
IRAC, MIPS, MUSYC near-IR. Comparison to AGN unified models. Spectroscopic and photometric redshifts for X-ray sources, EXOs (IR data).
Treister (thesis), Urry, ...

AGN catalog of infrared sources
Matching to X-ray catalogs. Optically-faint, infrared-bright AGN (EXOs). High-z AGN. Infrared & multiwavelength luminosity functions.
Virani (thesis), Urry, ...

AGN variability
Finding AGN via their variability between the two epochs of Spitzer data. We are also interested in determining what fraction of these IRAC sources have X-ray counterparts.
