Harry Mulisch (1927) was a well-known Dutch novelist, essayist, and poet. Among his best-known novels are The Assault (“De Aanslag”, 1982) and The Discovery of Heaven (“De Ontdekking van de Hemel”, 1992). The Assault was made into a movie which won an Oscar for best foreign picture in 1986. In 2007 The Discovery of Heaven was voted “best Dutch novel of all time”. Its translation by Paul Vincent received positive reviews in the US. Mulisch died on October 30, 2010.
