Yale - Universidad de Chile Joint Program

The Departments of Astronomy of Yale University and the University of Chile are undertaking a joint program of graduate education and research in astronomy and astrophysics. This program is partly funded by the Fundación Andes, which sponsors cultural and educational enterprises in Chile.

The Joint Research Program consists of projects designed and executed by members of both departments, including faculty, post-docs and students. Andes Postdoctoral Fellows play an important role, as they spend part of their time at Calán (the informal name for U. de Chile Astronomy) and part at Yale.

All participants in these projects have access to telescope time available to both institutions, including the Chilean share of telescope facilities located in Chile. Thus joint projects have access to telescopes operated by the European Southern Observatory (including the 8.4m VLT telescopes), the Las Campanas Observatory (including the twin Magellan Telescopes), the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, and the Gemini Observatory. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array, which is currently under construction, will also be available to these joint projects. The Yale/Chile Joint Projects can also make use of Yale facilities, such as the WIYN telescope. Currently approved projects include

We expect additional projects to be authorized as the collaboration continues.

The Joint Graduate Program enrolls Chilean students, who receive masters degrees from Yale and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chile. The program also enables Yale students to work in Chile, both as participants in the joint research projects and on their own thesis work (which may well overlap). The joint Ph.D. program encompasses course work in both Santiago and New Haven, and Ph.D. thesis research supervised by members of both departments. Interested students should apply to both graduate programs. For information on the application process, and more details of the program, consult the graduate programs of the Yale astronomy department and the Doctorado en Ciencias, mencion Astronomia requirements for the Universidad de Chile.
