From 1830, when Yale's first and America's largest refractor, a 5-inch Dollond, was donated by Sheldon Clark, to the most recent acquisition of the Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium, a facility of the Astronomy Department at Yale University for education, student research, and public outreach made possible by the generous support of James Leitner ('75), private support has been essential to the program.
