--------------------------------------------------------- Files: gl_2012_J2000.cat1 - the correction to absolute proper motions (i.e. an inertial reference frame) is done via: - extragalactic objects (galaxies and QSOs) - on ICRS via Hipparcos (in some few cases Tycho2, PPM, ACT) - with respect to a kinematic model of the Galaxy - millisecond pulsars bulge_J2000.cat1 - absolute proper motions are with respect to bulge stars considered to be at rest. This file contains four clusters: NGC 6522, NGC 6528, NGC 6553, and HP 1 See readme file for the explanation of the file format ------------------------------------------------------ Other Cluster Data: RA, Dec., l,b, dist from the Sun, heliocentric radial velocity, metallicity are from the Harris database, the 2010 update. (Exceptions from this database are specified below for each cluster). The error in the distance is taken to be 10% of the distance. Solar Motion: Schonrich, Binney and Dehnen 2010, MNRAS 403, 1829 Rotation velocity of the LSR: 232 km/s (Carlin et al. 2012, 744, 25; see also Bovy et al. 2012, Schonrich 2012) For clusters measured with respect to bulge star (i.e. at l ~ few deg about 0, |b| ~ few deg), velocities are calculated as follows. Assume the bulge stars are at rest, at r ~ 8.0 kpc; the cluster is near the rotation axis of the disk, so the reflex proper motion is only that of the Sun (with values as listed above). Thus the bulge rotation is not taken into account. ------------------------------------------------------ Proper Motions: Proper-motion sources are given for each cluster. Major proper-motion sources: CH93 = Cudworth, K. M. \& Hanson, R. B. 1993, AJ 109, 2533 - kinematic model of the Galaxy O97 = Odenkirchen, M. et al. 1997, New Astronomy 2, 4770 - Hipparcos Paper I = Dinescu et al. 1997, AJ 114, 1014 - galaxies as inertial frame Paper II = Dinescu et al. 1999, AJ 117, 277 - galaxies and Hipparcos (clusters on the Hipparcos system are NGC 6093, NGC 6121, NGC 6144) Paper III = Dinescu et al. 1999, AJ 117, 1792 - compilation (various) Paper IV = Dinescu et al. 2003, AJ 125, 1373 - Hipparcos Paper V = Casetti-Dinescu et al. 2007, AJ 134, 195 - Hipparcos Paper VI = Casetti-Dinescu et al. 2010 AJ 140, 1282 - Hipparcos paper VII = Casetti-Dinescu et al. 2013 (in prep.) - Hipparcos Paper I, II and IV have used only photographic plate material (from SPM) for both epochs. Paper V, VI, VII have photographic plates as first epoch and CCD data as second epoch. Proper motion errors: For single determination, we use the formal error published with that determination. For some clusters that have several determinations in the literature, we have used only those preferred by us judging from the method, reliability of measurement, how deviant from a group of determinations it is, etc. These details are not all included here, but can be provided if needed. When we have multiple determinations, we calculate a simple (non-weighted) average. The formal error of this average is that determined from the scatter of the determinations. When the scatter of the determinations is smaller than the average of the individual (formal) errors of each measurement, we use as the error of the average, the average of individual errors (divided by sqrt(N_det)). --------------------------------------------------------------------- References for individual clusters: NGC 104, 47 Tuc ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ proper motion determinations: - Freire et al 2003, mnras 340, 1359 for 10 pulsars; - Anderson & King 2003 aj 126, 772 Erratum: AJ 128, 950 + SMC's proper motion from Kalivayallil et al. 2006, ApJ 652, 1213 - Anderson & King 2003 aj 126, 772 Erratum: AJ 128, 950 + SMC's proper motion from Vieira et al. 2010, AJ 140, 1934 *note: last two det are not completely independent NGC 288 ~~~~~~~ proper motion determinations: - Paper I - Guo 1995 (PhD Thesis, Yale University) NGC 362 ~~~~~~~ proper motion determinations: - O97 - Tuchloke 1992 (AAS 93, 311) corrected for SMC using Kallivayalil et al. 2006 APJ 652, 1213 - Tuchloke 1992 (AAS 93, 311) corrected for SMC using Vieira et al. 2010 AJ 140, 1934 *note: last two det are not completely independent NGC 1851 ~~~~~~~~ Paper I NGC 1904 (M 79) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Paper I NGC 2298 ~~~~~~~~ Paper I NGC 2808 ~~~~~~~~ Paper V NGC 3201 ~~~~~~~~ Paper V NGC 4147 ~~~~~~~~ proper motion determinations: - O97 - Wang et al. 2000 AAS 142, 373 NGC 4372 ~~~~~~~~~ Paper V NGC 4590 (M 68) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Paper II NGC 4833 ~~~~~~~~~ Paper V NGC 5024 (M 53) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ O97 NGC 5139 (w Cen) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Paper II NGC 5272 (M 3) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ proper motion determinations: - O97 - Geffert 1998 (AA 340, 305) - Wu et al. 2002 (ChJAA 2, 216) NGC 5466 ~~~~~~~~ - O97 Pal 5 ~~~~~ Kyle Cudworth 1998 unpublished (see Odenkirchen et al. 2009, for a discussion why proper motion obtained from fitting an orbit to tidal tails is not necessarily correct).
