I have posted instructions near the new astro printer for scanning documents and then send the results by email. I have included the instructions below:

I have updated the printer webpages on the astro website:

1) from yale astro homepage (www.astro.yale.edu), choose "Computer Information" link

2a) click on "Printers" link under Hardware menu (http://www.astro.yale.edu/dept/computer/printers.html)

2b) click on "Printing from Laptops" link under "Laptop Users" menu (http://www.astro.yale.edu/dept/computer/laptop-print.html)



Notes:

1) Windows laptop users: you will need to remove any existing printers called "duplex" or "lp" before you can use the new printer.

2) Scientific Linux workstatiosn can use the program "kprinter" to set your personal printing options.

Hi Folks,

Update on the new ricoh printer/copier in JWG204:

i) hole punch unit has been installed

ii) postscript engine has been installed ! No more (hopefully) problems printing pdf files on new printer.

iii) Still not working for laptop printing. Please use color (hp color laserjet) printer for laptops

IMPORTANT: These changes will affect anyone using a Yale Astronomy email address (eg. hugh@astro.yale.edu)



We will replace the current astronomy email system (hardware & software) in January. The tentative date is currently Sunday, January 7.

This upgrade is necessary to ensure reliable archiving & storage of your astronomy email messages.

Email access will remain unchanged. All your saved email messages will be retained.



New Email Policies:

1) All messages older than 90 days will be older automatically deleted from "Trash" and "Spam" folders. This will happen regardless of how often you check your email.

2) Users will be responsible for maintaining their: - email password - vacation message - email forwarding settings



When the upgrade occurs, you should expect a period of ~24 hours where our email system will be down, ie. messages sent to your Yale Astronomy address will be bounced.

No anti-spam software or filtering will be added (ie. spam email will remain the same).

Users will be able to use the new webmail software to change: - email password (Options -> Change Password) - vacation message (Options -> Vacation Message) - email forwarding settings (Options -> Vacation Message)





Upgrade Details:

New Hardware: - dual xeon process dell server (previous PIII) - 1G ram (previous 256M) - gigabit ethernet (previous 100Mbit) - RAID file system for email messages (previous single disk)

New Software - Scientific Linux 4.1 (previous redhat 7.1) - Incoming email server (MTA): postfix (previous qmail) - User email & account management (MDA): cyrus-imap (previous cyrus-imap) - webmail client (MUA): squirrelmail (previous horde-imp)

Possible future options will allow you to move messages to a new email account (eg. move all your message folders from your hugh@astro.yale.edu email account to your hugh.crowl@yale.edu account)

Summary:

We replaced the main astronomy printer in JWG204 today.

Basic printing should work the same from linux workstations. Default print settings remain the same.

Recommend printing large postscript files to color laserjet printer until postscript module arrives.

Printing from laptops will require changes, which I will describe later. Printing to color printer from laptop remains the same.

Interm solution (for linux workstations):

print black & white double-sided use: "lpr -Pduplex myfile.pdf" - this will use the new printer in JWG204

print black & white single-sided use: "lpr -Plp myfile.pdf" - this will use the new printer in JWG204

print color double-sided use: "lpr -Pycaalp myfile.pdf" - this will use the YCAA color printer in JWG459

print color single-sided use: "lpr -Pcolor myfile.pdf" - this will use the HP color laserjet in JWG204

The default printing is the same, eg. "lpr myfile.pdf" will print black & white double-sided.



Interm solution for laptops: print to HP color laserjet printer (color, single sided).

Detailed Report:

We received a new Ricoh color copier/printer today. We had expected it to arrive last week.

We are still waiting some additional components for the printer.

The following options are working:

print job reporting: - show file name & username of who is currently printing

password printing: - enter password at printer console before document will print
