Hi,

Tried to install the new idl licence server and it crashed astro8 (/data/dept).

I have reverted to the old licence and will have to contact rsi tech support...

Sorry for the interruption.

astro file server shutdown: TONIGHT 10pm

Hi, I need to reboot the astro file server (roc.astro.yale.edu) to configure new printing software.

I would like to do that tonight. Your /home files will be unavailable during this time. You will not be able to login during this time.

Please logout before 10pm (ie when you leave tonight).

You will need to reboot your computer tomorrow morning when you arrive.

Please contact us if this will conflict with your current work.

Thanks,

It seems the color laser printer on 2nd floor gibbs was set to print using manual paper feed. I have reset it to print using the paper tray.

astro email status

Did another reset to astro email server (phoenix) and increased the number of allowed concurrent connections from 10 to 20. This *should* clear up issues sending email from pine.

We have cleared out most problems from our email "relay" switch-over (end of August). Further, we are doing some (spam) filtering of incoming email. At this point, I would like to encourage faculty members to migrate from their astro email to their central email address. Benefits include: spam filtering, manage your own vacation messages, and more reliable service.

astro email backup

Looks like I forgot to turn on email last night after I plugged the machine into the new UPS. Email was off from roughly 7:30pm-9:20am.

It will take a few hours for the email server to clear the queued messages.

web & email shutdown tonight 7pm

I would like a brief shutdown the web(pegasus) & email(phoenix) servers to plug them into a new UPS.

This will delay delivery of email to @astro.yale.edu addresses a few hours, but you should not lose any email messages.

Please reply to this email if a shutdown tonight will cause problems.

power outage

The power outage also affected our computers. Our email server was slow in coming back up. You will need to reboot your workstation before you can access your files.

public ftp upload

I have created a "public" upload area on the astro ftp site. This will allow anonymous ftp uploads:

ftp.astro.yale.edu/pub/upload/

If a collaborator wishes to send you files, she can use ftp to upload them to this directoy.

However, you will not be able to see nor access these files until a system administrator changes the file permissions. This is an awkward process, and is not an appropriate mechanism for regular or "real-time" file sharing.

For security reasons, we do not have a general ftp upload/download area (ie. they tend to be hijacked for distributing pirated software/movies/audio, etc.)

printer status webpage

I have added web links to the printers webpage that shows current status of network printers.

You can use these web links to check if your document was successfully sent to the printer and to see which printer queues are available.

dept computer resources web update

I have updates some of the web pages describing email, web and remote ssh access for the astronomy department.

http://www.astro.yale.edu/dept/computer/

The links under "Servers & Access" are diagrams depicting on which machines various files live (eg /data/dept) and where to put web and ftp files for public access.
