new astro network

The new network jacks in your office can now be used with laptops. These connections are faster than the old ones.

To use these connections, you first need to register your latop with yale, visit the website:

http://www.yale.edu/netreg

and follow the instructions. For information about determining the hardware address of your laptop, see our astro FAQ:

astro server reboot: 6pm today (jul 20)

We need to reboot the astro file server this evening.

Your /home directory will be unavailable for ~25 minutes. Please logout of your workstations before you leave today. If you receive "stale file handle" error messages, you will need to reboot your workstation.

no backup of /data/dept this week

Hi everyone,

I have been requested by the university ITS department to "freeze" our backups of /data/dept (I would guess as part of the university grants investigation).

We currently perform a weekly backup (on weekends) of /data/dept. I recycle tapes so that old backups are overwritten each month.

I will remove our current tape media, and cease backups until new tapes have been ordered. I expect to regular backups to resume next week.

astro pine email

Hi folks,

Some of you may have noticed messages when using pine to read your astro email. I enabled a "secure connection" for astro email.

Some of you using redhat linux and pine will receive a warning message about authentication; this is the same message as you receive when using the webmail (www.astro.yale.edu:/mail/).

To stop this message you need to edit your pine configuration:

- from the pine main menu choose (S)etup - choose (C)onfig - edit the entry ($user will be your astro login name) inbox-path: {phoenix.astro.yale.edu}user.

- to read: inbox-path: {phoenix.astro.yale.edu/novalidate-cert}user.$user
