X-Win32 Installation for Windows XP

X-Win32 allows Windows XP users to connect to a Unix/Linux server. The user can then run programs remotely over the internet on the linux host.
Note: X-Win32 is not required for Macintosh OS X computers.
Note: Replace hostname "palan.astro.yale.edu" with "superior.astro.yale.edu" in instructions below

Download Xwin-32

Goto www.yale.edu/software to download X-win32 program. XWin32 Download page
The license key needed to run X-win32 is listed on the download page.
Remember this key, you will need it during program installation.
Download Xwin32 8.2



Install Xwin32

Double-click the downloaded to start installation program

Follow the screens until you reach the "License Agreement" section.
Choose Floating License
On the next screen, enter the licence key from the Yale software download page.

Follow remaining screens to finish installation of Xwin32.
Note: during installation, Windows may ask you to unblock the X-win32 application.
Choose Unblock in the Windows Firewall window


After Installation, Xwin32 will ask if you want to create a new session.
Choose Session Wizard
In the Session Wizard screen, choose connection type: ssh
and enter a name for the session (eg. superior).

On the next screen, enter host as superior.astro.yale.edu

Next for Login: enter your Yale NetID
Important: Leave the "Password:" field empty!
Click Next to continue

For Session Command, choose Linux
Then click Finish button

Configure SSH Session

From your Start menu, choose "X-win32 -> Xconfig".
This will bring up "X-win32 Configuration Window.
You should see your "superior" session listed.

Choose the Security Tab
Click on "Allow all host addresses" button
Click "Apply" button to continue

Return to the Sessions Tab
Highlight your "superior" session from the sessions list.
Then choose the Edit... button on the right

In the Edit Session window, choose the Advanced Tab
Enable "Send XAuth" checkbox
Click Save button to continue

From the Sessions Tab
Choose your "superior" session then click the "Launch" button on the right

You should see the "SSH Host Key Verification" window.
Click Yes to continue

X-win32 should now start a terminal window with a command-line prompt.






Starting Xwin32

From your Start menu, choose "X-win32 -> Xwin32"
You should see a "X" icon in the bottom right corner Icon Tray

From the blue "X" icon in your icon tray, the sessions sub-menu should now list your "superior ssh". Xwin32 icon tray
